Spring of 2025
Women of the Morning Star Spring 2025 Newsletter
Dear WMS members,
It has been too long since I sent a newsletter. Apologies, I have had some health problems that have impacted my ability to keep up with work and play. I am on the mend now so we will hope for the best!
The AMM rendezvous was Montana amazing; our camp site was right on the Bitterroot River. Other than a gully washer storm one night, and a black bear in camp, I was going to say it was uneventful – except it had many great events. Butchering a buffalo demonstration and Shawntel organized cooking a paunch for the feast!
We had a lovely meeting (I think while we were cutting up all the ingredients for the paunch)…Erin, Laura, Valeria, Jean, and more I’m not sure who else (feel free to correct my list. And maybe the paunch recipe Shawntel?
I went on a primitive canoe trip through Labyrinth Canyon in Green River, Utah, with Cindy Powell, Sue LaBiste and Robin Blankenship, Robin is an amazing primitive skills teacher Sue met at Rabbitstick and she offered to guide us through the canyon. This trip had been canceled a time or two for weather and other reasons, so we were very happy to actually go. It was an absolutely magical trip…even transformative.
Ft. Bridger Rendezvous: Jill did Larry’s plant demonstration as Larry had to leave early. She talked about many things but the primitive medicine kit really caught my attention. Plantain, willow, yarrow, and mullein keeping each separate with muslin wraps is just so sensible to have on hand!
We went to the fur trade symposium at the Museum of the Mountain Man at Pinedale, WY. They had some excellent speakers; we did demonstrations of different kinds of Mountain Man foods for the paying guests. They fed us lunch and dinner – the food was very good.
The quillwork and brain tanning seminar at Jeans was excellent as always. The techniques are starting to stick in my brain! Sandra Roberts and Jill were there and Shawntel and Valeria. I did not take very good notes so please jump in and correct me! Oh Erin got there just as I was leaving I think.
The AMM rendezvous is on the Wyoming land again this year…I am likely going to the Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous which will be in Lonetree, Wyoming. It is close to the 1825 rendezvous site.
Please jump in if there are any corrections or inaccuracies!
My very best wishes to all of you, Mary (Moki’s Wife)
